Approximately 6% of the electricity produced in the US goes to power air conditioners. With about 75% of homes having one, it’s very important to make sure your heating and air conditioning units are running efficiently.
Let’s dive into some simple steps you can take to keep your HVAC systems in top shape.
Optimize Your HVAC System

It’s important to choose the correct size and system design for your home or office. An HVAC professional can help you choose a system that will be efficient for your situation.

You can also take additional steps to make things run better. Installing a programmable thermostat can reduce wear and tear on the system by reducing drastic temperature changes. It will also help keep the area comfortable overall.

Making your home or office more energy efficient will help reduce the load on the system. Insulate and seal doors and windows. You can also use energy-efficient window curtains.

Check the Drainpipe and Drain Pan

Every so often, you should check the drain pipe and drain pan of your HVAC system. Sometimes algae or mold can build up in the drainpipe. Using a wet-dry vacuum is a good way to remove clogs and bleach can be used to clean it.

Doing this is very important as clogs can cause serious issues. If it blocks up, water can end up leaking, possibly into the ceiling, depending on where your unit is.

Checking the drainpipe and pan is something you can easily do yourself. If you don’t know where the drain pipe is, your service technician can show you where to find it.

Replace the Filters

Filters keep the unit clean and remove particles from the air. The particles can build up over time, so it’s very important to change them every one to three months. You may need to replace them more often during allergy season or if you have pets.

If you have a ductless system, you may need to have the filters cleaned instead. Air purification systems also need periodic servicing for their filters, too.

Clean the Condensing Unit

At least once a season, you should clean the condensing unit off. The metal fins of the fan can get clogged up by dirt and pollen. You can simply spray the outside with a hose. Don’t use a pressure washer or spray the inside of the unit. This can cause damage.

You should also make sure the area around the condensing unit doesn’t have large piles of leaves, overgrown vegetation, or other debris. You want to have about two feet of clearance on all sides to allow enough airflow to the unit.

Schedule Professional Maintenance

Pushing off maintenance or repairs can lead to worse problems and higher costs down the road. Take the time to schedule heating repair or air conditioning repair as soon as an issue arises.

Preventative maintenance can keep your system in top condition. A licensed professional should perform this maintenance about twice a year. Spring and fall are popular times to have it done.

Find a local professional who knows the typical situations of your climate, such as HVAC Cumming, GA. Searching “heating and air near me” can help you find a service provider.

Heating and Air Conditioning Care

Taking care of your heating and air conditioning system can help it run more efficiently and have a longer life span. While there is some maintenance you can do yourself, a licensed professional can also help with preventative maintenance.
