Is your AC stinking up your home? Do you find yourself constantly without air conditioning in your home because your air conditioner is always breaking down? It may be time to replace your old unit with a newer model. As a homeowner, one of the toughest decisions you'll have to make is just when to stop paying for repairs and get a replacement. Replacing your air conditioner doesn't have to be complicated. Keep reading to learn five signs that you need to replace your air conditioner unit. 1. Your Air Conditioning Unit is Ten Years Old or Older
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the lifespan of a central air conditioner is about 15 to 20 years. The department's data shows that even if your air conditioner is 10 years old, you can save 20% to 40% on cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient unit. 2. Bad Smells Come From Your AC Your heating and cooling unit should be putting out neutral-smelling air. Every heating and cooling system is meant to produce some amount of moisture, but if there's a water leak in your system, this could lead to smelly mold. If a smokey or burning smell is coming from your air conditioner, have it inspected immediately, as it could be indicative of a serious problem. 3. Your AC Unit Makes Strange Noises Noises like grinding or squeaking aren't supposed to be coming from your air conditioner unit. Most AC units are designed to make as little noise as possible. If your AC is making strange noises, it's time for you to upgrade. 4. Your Home Isn't as Comfortable As It Once Was This may be the most obvious sign that your air conditioner isn't functioning as it should. You want the air conditioning to work in your home. So if you're finding it difficult to keep your home cool, it's in your best interest to buy a new AC unit. 5. Your Air Conditioner Constantly Needs Repairs No one likes dealing with a heating and cooling unit that's constantly malfunctioning. You can only repair an AC so many times until the costs of the repairs start to outweigh the costs of having a new unit installed. Thanks for the tip that the smells can also be an indicator to know if it's time to get air conditioning services. I'm planning to hire a contractor that will check the air conditioner in my daughter's room because she has been complaining about its mustiness lately. I'm a bit worried that we might be dealing with a mold problem.

When you mentioned strange noises as a reason to replace your AC, I remember something my son told me a few days ago. He told me the cooling unit we currently use makes this weird buzzing noise every now and then, and I wondered if that was a sign of a technical failure. Considering we've had that unit for years now, I'll play it safe and have an HVAC contractor replace it right away.

I never knew that the age of your AC unit could affect its overall comfort and efficiency. My best friend wants to move into his uncle's old property since it's closer to his university. I'll be sure to recommend that he consult an AC repair expert when these signs appear.

I found it interesting when you said when to cease paying for the maintenance and acquire a replacement is one of the most difficult decisions you'll have to make. I used to think differently about it not until you explained it briefly and it really got my attention. What you said about air conditioning was really interesting to me.

Great tip about how the AC will last between 15 and 20 years. I think I am on year 13 of my unit. I'll have to make sure that it gets regular maintenance.

I really appreciate you talking about strange noises as a reason for getting an AC replaced. Lately, our heating and cooling unit has been getting quite loud to the point that we'd rather not even use it if we're trying to sleep. I'll have an HVAC expert get us a new unit to make things easier for all of us.

It got me when you said that bad smells from the AC can indicate water leaks. My husband and I want to maintain the level of comfort in our house for our senior parents and two sons. We are hoping to find experts tomorrow morning who can repair the old AC unit in our living room within one hour.

I noticed yesterday that my furnace started smelling badly in the morning. I have never experienced this before. Thank you for pointing out that this could be something that is serious since it smells like something is burning. We will call for an HVAC specialist this afternoon.

Thanks for pointing out how one should upgrade to a new air conditioner if theirs is making strange grinding noises. The AC at my house has been unusually loud for the past couple of days, making a weird grinding sound. I will be sure to have a new AC installed as soon as possible before anything bad develops from those noises.
